Las Peñitas and Poneloya
León is a little over twenty kilometres from the Pacific. Two beaches can be done in a day from the hotel: Poneloya, the classic one, and Las Peñitas, which has more places to eat and stay. You can go and come back the same day without rushing.
Practical information
- Duration
- Full day
- Difficulty
- None · Open beach with currents. You must be very careful with the currents. Even if you are a strong swimmer, you should not underestimate them.
- Getting there
- By bus from León or by arranged round-trip taxi. The bus leaves every hour from Mercadito de Sutiaba (Félix Pedro Carrillo Market and Bus Terminal), generally from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes.
- What to bring
- Cash, sunscreen, water and a towel. The hotel towel stays in the hotel.
Which of the two
Poneloya is the historic beach of León families, long and open. Las Peñitas is to the south, more sheltered, and concentrates the eateries and guesthouses; it is also where boats leave for the Juan Venado reserve.
With children, Las Peñitas works better: there is shade, somewhere to sit and food without walking half the beach.
The current, seriously
This is open Pacific and there are rip currents. It is not a swimming-pool beach: some stretches have strong undertow and there is not always a lifeguard. Ask locally before going in, and with children do not take your eyes off them for a minute.
We say it here because it is the kind of thing that does not appear in brochures but does come up at the front desk.
What time to head back
The sunset at Las Peñitas is the reason to stay late, and the transport back is the reason not to do it without a plan. If you go by bus, check the last departure; if you go by taxi, agree the pick-up time before getting out.
Where to stay for this plan
Two-bedroom apartment
With children, the two-bedroom apartment has a terrace facing the pool and a kitchen for dinner after the beach.
For the trip itself, at reception we put you in touch with trusted local tour operators. The hotel no longer runs its own tours.
