The ruins of León Viejo
Today's León is not the first one. Francisco Hernández de Córdoba founded the city in 1524 on the shore of Lake Xolotlán, at the foot of the Momotombo volcano. That city was abandoned in 1610 after eruptions, earthquakes and bloody conflicts among the colonisers themselves, and was refounded where it stands now, next to the indigenous settlement of Sutiaba.

What you see today
What remains are foundations: the outline of the square, the ruins of the cathedral and several houses. It is not spectacular in height, it is spectacular in meaning: it is the oldest excavated Spanish city in Nicaragua and a Unesco World Heritage site since 2000, with a beatiful view of the Lake Xolotlán.
Momotombo is right behind. It is probably the best view of the volcano you will get without climbing it.
How the trip works
It is some thirty kilometres from León, near La Paz Centro, on the way to Managua. It is a half-day trip: leave early, walk the site with a guide and come back for lunch.
There is almost no shade on the route. A hat and water are not optional.
Where to stay for this plan
One-bedroom apartment, ground floor
It is a half-day trip. The ground-floor apartment opens straight onto the garden for the afternoon by the pool that follows.
For the trip itself, the reception can put you in touch with trusted local tour operators if you so wish. The hotel no longer runs its own tours.
